Goldfields Mining Centre

Located on the historic Kawarau River banks, visitors can experience the thrill of finding gold amongst virgin ground through traditional gold panning techniques, where valuable nuggets are still to be found. This special place offers visitors appreciation of the life and working environment of early miners who struggled against harsh and dangerous conditions along Central Otago's famed Kawarau Gorge.

Professional Experiences

Public Fossicking Areas

New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals (NZPAM) has designated gold fossicking areas under the Crown Minerals Act 1991, where you can freely enjoy recreational gold mining without a permit. Many of these sites are administered by the Department of Conservation, providing legal and accessible locations for gold panning enthusiasts.

The Technique

Gold panning combines skill, patience, and a deep understanding of how gold behaves in water. Much of Central Otago's gold is alluvial, found through panning with water to separate gold from sediment. The technique involves:

Sampling - Selecting gravel from likely spots in streams and rivers

Washing - Using circular motions to allow heavier gold to settle

Concentrating - Gradually removing lighter materials

Finishing - Careful final separation to reveal any gold
